OUR STORY
HOW IT ALL BEGAN

A way to make peace in my world.
I don’t think that my journey from being a sighted person to a mostly blind person is much different than anyone else’s. I ate the constant pain, and drank the societal koolaid, just like everyone else does in the beginning. I mourned the loss of my former life and abilities just the same as we all did.
The difference in my story is that I listened to the people I met along the way. I took stock in the training I received. I got by through telling myself each morning that today was going to be a better day than yesterday was. I had some fantastic coaching from some folks who weren’t afraid of what I had become: a blind man.
When all was said and done, I found that I needed more in my life than just what society expects blind and low vision people to do. I could not stay compartmentalized; I wanted more. I needed something… . After having some great talks with some very smart and humble friends both new and old, The North American Association of Blind Sportsmen was born. I knew I had found a way to give back to the community that had given me the tools and the confidence to actively pursue a vibrant and exciting way of living my new life.
The North American Association of Blind Sportsmen Is a nonprofit organization that helps blind and vision impaired people from all over North America take on hunting and fishing adventures that they might never dare on their own. We fund the adventures through membership fees, donations, and grants. The NAABS is run by the blind, for the benefit of the blind.
Cheers,
Lance Mathena President, NAABS

OUR HISTORY

It all started with a sneeze in class.

Founder Lance Mathena, while sitting in focus group as part of a college class, sneezes.  That sneeze would change his world in ways he could not imagine. He ruptures four discs in his neck, and undergoes emergency surgery. The surgery is only partially successful. It left Lance in pain he could hardly bear, and for the next year, Lance struggles through. He barely manages to hold onto his employment due to multiple hospital trips, doctor appointments, and mental fuzzyness due to constant need of pain medications.
